How do I submit an Expression of Interest?
An Expression of Interest for Australian immigration is an online process via a system called SkillSelect.
What does an Expression of Interest comprise of?
The Expression of Interest for Australian immigration is basically a series of questions asking you about your skills. The answers you give are used to calculate your ability to meet the points test for certain visas.
Further to this, the EOI is accessed by employers as well as state and territory government agencies where you have specified your interest in a sponsored skilled visa for a particular area.
Information submitted will include:
- Personal information, for example given names and surname, date of birth, countries of citizenship and/or residence.
- The nominated occupation.
- Your work experience and employment history.
- English language proficiency.
- Any information pertaining to a state or territory nomination. This shows whether you are prepared to live and work in regional Australia.
Do I need to submit supporting documents?
You do not have to submit supporting documents when making your Expression of Interest for Australian immigration. This means all the information you provide will be taken at face value.
Due to this, we would like to again stress the need to carry out a comprehensive assessment.
What happens after I've submitted my Expression of Interest?
You can still access your Expression of Interest after it has been submitted to:
- Update information and details, if your circumstances have changed; and/or
- Suspend the Expression of Interest.

What can the outcome of the Expression of Interest be?
If successful, the Expression of Interest has one of two outcomes:
- You receive an invitation to apply for a visa.
- An Australian employer contacts you to discuss employment and sponsorship opportunities.
The highest ranking EOIs under Independent and Skilled Regional (Provisional) visas will automatically receive invitations to apply. These invitations are normally extended every month and are subject to occupation ceilings.
State and territory sponsored visas will see the state or territory identify and select the skilled workers they wish to nominate. Please be aware that the state or territory may well contact applicants before nominating them.
In the event that you are selected, and you have submitted a points score in excess of the required pass mark, you will receive an invitation to apply from the SkillSelect system.
What if I am not invited to apply for a visa?
Your Expression of Interest will stay in the SkillSelect for a maximum of two years should you not get an invite.
However, it is a fact that the number of people who want to migrate to Australia are higher than the number of available places.
Unfortunately this means some Expressions of Interest won't get an invitation to apply.
What happens when I'm invited to apply?
The invitation to apply will come from SkillSelect. Upon receipt, you will have 60 days to make your visa application.
It is at this stage that you will provide all the evidence to support the information given on your expression of interest.
Who can assist me with my Expression of Interest?
The Australian Government's Department of Immigration and Border Protection is very clear about who may provide you with assistance. Only migration agents registered with MARA may provide immigration advice and assistance.
Using unregistered migration agents could leave you at risk of being given incorrect or misleading advice. Also, as you will not have the benefit of consumer protection, an unregistered agent might take your money without providing an adequate service or even any service at all.'
